Iliad Group nabs broadband funding

The Iliad Group has secured a loan of EUR 200 million from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to fund Iliad’s next round of fixed broadband network deployments. The EIB previously had loaned EUR 150 million loan to bankroll previous infrastructure roll outs. The EIB is the long-term lending institution of the European Union owned by its member states. It makes long-term finance available to support EU policy goals. Approximately 65% of the funds will be earmarked for the deployment of fiber to the home (FTTH). Much of the rest will go toward enhancing the carrier’s ADSL2+ network and promote unbundling. This next phase of construction will focus on less densely populated areas of the country under a cofinancing agreement signed with the incumbent operator in July 2011 designed to reach around 60 towns and villages. Said EIB Vice-President Philippe de Fontaine Vive, “Innovation and support for advanced information technologies are one of the EIB’s top priorities. Our goal is to foster the development of a competitive European economy based on the knowledge triangle of education, research, and innovation. We are therefore delighted by this partnership with Iliad, a key player in the digital revolution in France. The inhabitants of small towns and villages will benefit in particular from this operation.” “We welcome this partnership with the EIB, which will enable the Iliad Group to press ahead with the rollout of the digital fixed networks of tomorrow and strengthen its key position in France’s telecom’s sector,” added Xavier Niel, founder of the Iliad/Free Group.

Zayo adds 400G to Spokane to Portland route

Zayo Group says that it has increased the capacity of its fiber route from Spokane to Portland by 400 Gbps.

The network services provider asserts the extra capacity on the low-latency router will improve its ability to serve the needs of major carriers, industries, and businesses in the region. The upgrades necessitated installation of new equipment and replacement of some existing systems.

In addition to direct connections, the route also will offer an alternative path to the zColo facility at 2001 6th Avenue in Seattle, from Spokane and Portland.

"The Spokane to Portland route serves as a differentiator for Zayo's wavelength service," says Zach Nebergall of Zayo's Wavelength Product Group. "It provides diversity from other Spokane to Seattle routes, and gives Zayo the ability to serve more customers in the Spokane, Portland and Seattle metro markets."

CyOptics introduces power-efficient 10G TOSA for DWDM SFP+ transceivers

CyOptics Inc., maker of Indium Phosphide (InP) optical chip and component technologies, announced a new series of 10 Gbps transmit optical subassemblies (TOSAs) for the emerging DWDM SFP+ transceiver market. The TOSAs offer a reduction in power consumption of at least 30% versus current-generation TOSAs, says a representative. The 1655 (40 km) and 1656 (80 km) series TOSAs are compatible with the 10-Gbps miniature device (XMD) multi-source agreement. The new optical components integrate a high-speed, electro-absorptive modulated laser (EML), a monitor photodiode, and a micro thermo-electric cooler (TEC) in a small form factor metalized ceramic package. The TOSAs operate at data rates of up to 11.3 Gbps and are available in the full range of C-band ITU-T wavelengths. “Network equipment manufacturers are rapidly deploying SFP+ transceivers because they provide a smaller footprint and are more cost-effective than XFP transceivers,” says Ovum’s vice president and practice leader Daryl Inniss. “The new CyOptics TOSAs enable module manufacturers to offer a complete portfolio of SFP+ transceivers. We project 10-Gbps DWDM pluggable transceivers to grow at a compounded annual growth rate of over 30% from 2010 through 2013, representing one of the fastest growing market segments in the optical component space.” "The new CyOptics TOSAs augment the application space of the SFP+ form factor to now address all types of 10-Gbps applications with the inclusion of metropolitan area 80-km TDM and DWDM links,” says Ed Coringrato, chief executive officer and president of CyOptics. The 1655 and 1656 TOSAs exhibit the same wavelength stability as their 162x predecessors, supporting operation at 100-GHz channel spacing over 20 years, with low hazard rates (~100 FIT). At a package case temperature of -5 to +75C the 165X series consumes a maximum of 0.45 W (40 km, DWDM) and 0.5 W (80 km, DWDM). For industrial temperature applications with a case temperature of -40 to +90C, the TOSAs consume only 0.85 W (40 km, DWDM) and 0.95 W (80 km, DWDM), an approximate 35% reduction from its predecessors, according to a representative.

XFP tranceivers feature extended temp capabilities/OCP adds XFP 10-km temperature options

March 16, 2006 San Jose, CA -- Bookham's IGF-42312 is an "extended temperature" XFP transceiver module that operates between -10°C and +85°C -- a temperature range twenty degrees wider than of standard devices, says the company. The transceiver supports SONET/SDH SR-1/I-64.1, 10G Ethernet, and 10G Fibre Channel applications up to 10 km, including FEC rates. The company says the module is the first of a series designed to enable increased port density in networking equipment while avoiding the resulting thermal challenges. The module has surpassed a 1000-hour interim phase of the Telcordia GR-468-CORE requirements for reliability in optoelectronic devices used for telecommunications and is now shipping "under controlled availability."Â "Bookham's extended temperature XFP modules allow our customers to increase their port count without having to worry about the thermal ramifications," maintains Eugene Park, product line manager of pluggable transceivers at Bookham. "Higher density translates to a lower cost-per-port solution for their customers." Recently, Bookham also announced completion of Telcordia GR-468-CORE qualification testing for two 40-km XFP transceiver products designed for metro carrier, enterprise, and storage networking applications. The IGF-32511 is a multi-protocol 1550-nm transceiver that supports SONET/SDH IR-2/S-64.2b, 10G Ethernet, and 10G Fibre Channel applications. The IGF-17511 is a 1550-nm transceiver used exclusively for 10G Ethernet applications which meets the 10GBASE-ER/EW specification. Both hot-pluggable XFP MSA transceivers are currently shipping in volume. DECEMBER 13, 2006 -- Optical Communication Products, Inc. (search for OCP) has announced the availability of its industrial (-40 to +85C) and extended (-5 to 85C) temperature XFP pluggable optical transceivers. "We are addressing the expanded application requirements of the XFP market by offering additional operating temperature options to our portfolio," said Kirk Bovill, director of marketing. "We are sampling our cost and performance optimized modules to several customers." The XFP transceiver is designed to provide multi-protocol support for the 10-Gigabit Ethernet, OC-192 SONET/SDH, and 10-Gigabit Fibre Channel to distances of up to 10 km. The multi-rate modules support data rates ranging from 10.7 to 9.95 Gbits/sec. These modules are compatible with ITU-T G.691, ITU-T G.709, and Telcordia GR-253 standards. The serial electrical interface and DDM functionality are based per the XFP MSA. The DDM functionality enables the end-user to monitor internal temperature, DC supply voltage, transmitter bias current, transmitter output power, and receive optical signal level in the performance of the XFP transceiver. Integrated DDM functionality also incorporates warnings and alarms to monitor these parameters.
